Recently, the government has established a body of independent peers and specialists to conduct a survey and measure the cost efficiency of the rail services in the United Kingdom as compared to prices across Europe including more advanced economies such as Germany and wealthier countries like Sweden.

The research has been led by one of the most prominent transport specialists, Sir Roy McNulty who was a chairman of the Civil Aviation authority and whose competence in the area is undoubted. Furthermore, social interactions have been allowed and people have directly answered questions on what their most serious concerns are. The results indicate one-sided problem with many shades on the side - the problems seem to emerge from the unreasonably high fares that the railway services are charging customers. As compared to Germany and Sweden, the fares are almost 30% higher, however, during a rising inflation level and only a few months left until the beginning of the traditional autumn transport increase due to inflation in the past year, things do not seem quite bright for the people who use the rail services on a regular basis.
According to Sir Roy McNulty the prices can be far more reasonable if they are let not to increase and if the increase is only in trend with the reasonably expected inflation. This should not affect the prices significantly in the upcoming year which would give a chance of the people to get used to a better priced services. Human resources software has also been proposed as a good alternative in managing huge queues and delays on the tracks, however, this seems to be of little importance given the capacity that people have to pay. Most of the people questioned by the surveyors about their comments complain mainly because of the prices. However, the industry remains the best performing branch as thousands of people every minute use the rail services.
