Lavender beside essential oil bottlesThere are places in the world famous for the plants cultivated in them. These places include wine-producing regions and those with orchards. Famous flower-producing areas in Europe include the tulip farms in the Netherlands and lavender fields in Provence. For example, in Sequim, a realtor would tell newcomers that the area is also famous for its lavender farms. Sequim is the second largest area where this much-loved plant is grown.

    Lavender Capital of North America

Sequim is not the typical Washington city. Its average rainfall is less than 16 inches, which is roughly equal to that of Los Angeles, California. However, some of the wettest temperate rain forests in the United States are close to the city. With a low amount of precipitation, the fogs from the San Juan de Fuca Strait make the city seem more humid than it really is. The unique climate makes it ideal for commercial lavender cultivation. Perfumes use lavender in its manufacture. Lavender is also used as a base for other fragrances. Lavender is grown in areas that are warm, with a lot of sunshine, and well-draining soil. Farmers want to plant lavender in lean soil or the type with alkaline or chalky soil. Lean soil and alkalinity will result in an improved concentration of essential oils.

    Growing Lavender

Even though lavender is resilient and hardy, it still requires the best growing conditions for it to thrive in numbers. A severe winter or very humid summer can result in a loss of some plants. Being heavy-handed with fertilizer is also not advised; otherwise, there would be a thin yield of oils. Farmers are advised to use only a handful of compost at the bottom of the planting hole before planting and to keep the plots watered regularly during the first year. These plots of land are replanted every ten years, when the plants start to decline.

Lavender is a delightful fragrance and can be hardy in the right conditions. Sequim has the proper climate for this cash crop, leading the city to have lavender as a large cash crop for its farmers.
